DESCRIPTION

Best of Patmos Route - A self-guided bike tour with great trails, fantastic views and charming landscapes, peppered with cultural and scenic highlights.

The tour starts at the port of Skala. From there, an ancient paved trail leads to the Grotto of the Apocalypse, where John is said to have received the revelation from God. According to the Bible, God spoke to a human being for the last time in this place, that is why the cave is one of the holiest places of Christianity.

Continuing on a stony path, you will reach the edge of the village of Chora, with its beautiful windmill hills. The next trail leads you to the bay of Grikos. Here, it goes directly to the sea along the Petra Beach with its striking, outstanding sea rocks.

Leaving the coast, you will go up the highest peak of the island, at the top of which stands a monastery. From here, you can have a 360 ° view over the Aegean Sea. You will then ride on a fantastic single trail leading to Chora and cycle through the alleyways of this picturesque village with its white cube houses to the entrance door of the world-famous Johannes Monastery. Schedule some time for the visit of this monastery – it is worth it!

The way back leads first through the streets of Chora, past the main square, where you can take a coffee break and enjoy the typical Greek atmosphere of this charming place to the fullest. Through the streets, you will continue to the three windmills, from where a long nature trail leads down to the harbor. You will not just enjoy biking on the trail but also the fantastic views! In town you can stop for a bite or relax on the small sandy beach.

Grotto of the Apocalypse - Today, the Holy Grotto is surrounded by buildings of the revelation monastery, whose white walls stand out clearly from the rocky surroundings. Together with the Monastery of St. John in Chora, the cave was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

John the Theologian was said to have lived in exile on Patmos in the 1st century AD and to have received the revelation of God in the cave the Apocalypse. According to the Bible, this was the last time that God spoke directly to a person. The text of the Apocalypse is the last book of the New Testament. It is one of the most important prophetic and eschatological texts in theological literature.

John is said to have heard the voice of God asking him to write down the revelation through the still visible triple crack in the wall of the grotto. The Apocalypse is a preview of the future development of earth and humanity and was recorded by John in a kind of letter to the seven Christian primitive communities in Asia Minor.

The well-known introductory words of the text are: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, says the Lord God, who is, and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

The eloquent text and fearsome visions was of major influence on the Christian tradition, influencing millions of believers in their thinking. A visit to the Grotto of the Apocalypse is highly recommended - visitors receive during their stay detailed explanations from a monk.

Monastery of St. John the Theologian: Patmos Monastery is located on a hill that rises high above the island in the main town of Chora. The fortress-like complex was built in the 11th century by Blessed Christodoulos as a citadel with mighty enclosing walls to protect the monastery from pirate attacks.

Within the monastery walls are ten chapels where the monks perform their daily prayers, as the orthodox faith requires. The main church was built in Byzantine style and is decorated with ornate frescoes. The wooden carved iconostasis is a real work of art. Among the most important icons of the monastery are the icon of Saint John Theologos, donated by Emperor Alexios I and an icon of St. Nicholas in mosaic technique.

Above the entrance to the main church hangs a wooden beam against which the monks hit daily when they enter the church. The beam symbolizes the wood of Noah's Ark, on which Noah, according to the Bible, should hit to invite the animals into the ark. Till this day, in the Greek Orthodox Church, this is used to invite the believers to enter the Church.

The treasury and the library of the monastery are also worth visiting.

As a sacred site of Christianity and important place of pilgrimage, the Monastery of Patmos has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

Daily from 8 am to 1:30 pm
