DESCRIPTION

This spectacular "Get familiar to Kos" ride includes some of the best currently existing singletracks on Kos, all built in between 2017-2019 according to international MTB standards, such as the "United Nations & Trail Brothers Trails", the "Bike Aid Trail" and the "Flow Turtle trail". A unique opener for a biking holiday on Kos and its neighbouring islands.

The starting point of this tour, which is characterized by fantastic views, is the main port "Mandraki" of Kos City. Leave this port eastwards (to the left), passing the medieval Johanniter fortress. The first 4km along the coast to Psalidi are an excellent warm-up., before you turn right to inland.

The following section takes you over an 8km long continuous ascent to one of the peaks Mt. Sympetro at 430m. During the whole ascent you will be motivated by a beautiful panorama: you can see the Turkish east coast with the Bodrum peninsula and the northern islands Kalymnos, Plati and Pserimos. In good weather conditions you can even see Leros Island behind Kalymnos. At the top you will be rewarded by a 360° view. Southwards you can also see the Turkish Datça peninsula, the Greek islands Nisyros and Tilos and in clear weather even Rhodes.

Beside the great views the first single trail is waiting as a reward. The entrance is directly behind the antennas towards the west. The so called "Bike Aid Trail” is a real "Ridge Line" of 1.2km length over the mountain ridge (please be careful with very strong winds) with varied passages of approach curves, faster sections and a short ridable counter ascent. The “Bike Aid Trail” ends on a wider natural path which leads you after 400m to the next trail. This approx. 500m long single track runs very smoothly through the pine forest and later through an open macchia field.

From here the next destination is a little below the already known Antenna mountain top. The ascent leads almost exclusively through the shady pine forest. The start of the next single track, the "United Nations and Trail Brothers Trail" is clearly visible. A shaped line with several bends meanders downhill through the forest and ends on a wider route with a view of the city of Kos. After only 500m you reach directly the next and last trail of this tour, the lower part of the "Flow Turtle Trail". After 1.4km of pure driving fun you will be spat out again just above the reservoir.

From here you roll back to the center of the city via small side roads and you can directly reach almost all sights on this way. The colorful market place almost automatically invites you to an after- ride coffee or beer. Good ice cream is also available right around the corner.

DESCRIPTION

Kardamena Route on Kos IslandOur tip for this bike tour: If you have a lamp for biking and like to get up early, you can schedule this tour in a way that you are right at sunrise at the castle and can enjoy the magnificent view of Kardamena Bay and the wide Aegean Sea in a very special light!

The starting point of this easy cross-country tour is the roundabout at the small port of Mastichari. You leave the town on the smoothly rising road towards the airport. After 1.5km turn left onto a gravel road and then right again through an olive grove into the interior of the island.

From here, a 4km long ascent takes you to the plateau in the middle of the island, about 130m above sea level. Here you have to cross the main road to reach the fortress of Antimachia. It is the largest of four former St John's castles in Kos. If you wish, you can even carry your bike inside and follow the narrow paths inside the fortress wall (attention: many thorns!). From the castle you have a fantastic view of the south coast of the island with the village of Kardamena. In the distance you can see the Datҁa peninsula, which belongs to Turkey, as well as the Greek islands Tilos and Nisyros.

After visiting the castle, on the western side of the fort, you will find a narrow slab path that leads down to the plain of Kardamena. Now you pedal only a few metres further and you have arrived in the coastal town.

Tip for water fans: If you want to swim, go east along the coast (from the promenade to the left). Here are beautiful sandy beaches and there is also a bar!

Also in Kardamena itself there are sufficient possibilities for eating and drinking at the promenade and in the village, where you can have a deserved rest. If you follow the promenade to the right (westwards), you will reach a small bridge and as soon as you have crossed it, you simply stay directly on the coast towards the Kefalos peninsula. On the right, there are a few hotels and some small canyons. After approx. 2.5km turn right into one of the canyons and ride on passing the airport to the road to Kefalos in the centre of the island. The road to Kefalos you leave after 300m again in the direction of Plaka (signposted) and you will get into a small pine forest with wild peacocks. From here you ride through an uninhabited area back to the north coast of the island. The last meters on the beach promenade of Mastichari lead you back to the starting point.

And one last tip for this Kardamena Route: In the evening you can experience very beautiful sunsets in Mastichari, preferably in one of the local fish taverns or cocktail bars.

DESCRIPTION

Nisyros Sightseeing Route: a biking tour that takes you to all the major sights of the island, but with only a few trails.

This tour starts at the port of Mandraki in easterly direction. The first 2 km are an easy rolling on the flat coastal road, until you see a sign “Nikia” on the right side. It follows a 5 km (almost 330 m) long ascent on asphalt with many panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

On the way you pass the junction to the mountain village of Emporios: make a detour to the village entrance and if you feel like it, you can also go to the natural sauna in the rock!

Then follow the main road uphill again, where you were before, until you reach another turnoff. Here you can decide if you want to go straight into the crater or uphill to the beautiful mountain village Nikia. If you already turn right here and follow the sign "volcano", your tour will be about 10 km shorter and 120 m of elevation easier.

However, it is absolutely recommendable to drive up to Nikia first. Shortly before the village you can turn right and enjoy the 360° view from the Profitis Ilias church . The view to the mountain village, the crater and the blue sea is rewarding!

In the village you can take a short walk through the narrow streets and have a coffee break in the Kafenion on the picture-book Plateia. Here you can have warm chocolate cake with volcano ice cream, good coffee and much more.  Try "Sumada" - the local almond syrup from the island. You can enjoy it as a refreshment diluted with water and ice cubes.

After the break you leave the village again on the asphalt road back to the junction to the volcano. Turn left here and enter the big crater with a diameter of 4 km. You then reach a car park with a kiosk on the plain. Directly to the left is the Stefanos crater, which you can walk into. Attention: here it smells strongly of sulfur and one can look right into the earth.

From the kiosk you drive back a short distance and then turn right onto the natural path. This leads slightly uphill around the Stefanos crater and then becomes 2x quite steep on a short stretch. You pass a small monastery, go downhill for a bit of rest and then another 1 km long steeper ascent follows.

Afterwards it goes almost only downhill to Mandraki. Follow the same path until the underground changes to concrete. There you meet a T-junction. Here you can already see the entrance to the trail back to the harbour village, which you of course won't miss at the end of a great tour. After about 300m you reach the old Kastro with its giant walls. If you climb the walls, you have a great view of the port Mandraki.

The final trail leads directly into the village and over narrow lanes along small white cubic houses to the promenade. Various taverns invite you to stop here.

EMBROS THERMAL SPRING ROUTE (KOS)

Self-Guided / Day Tour / Cross Country – easy MTB tour from Kos city to Embros Thermal Springs. Get your free Gps Track Here!

Elevation: 350 M

Kilometres: 27 KM

Trail Percentage: 5 %

CATEGORIES: CLOSE TO THE SEA, CROSS-COUNTRY, SUITABLE for E-MTB

Landscape

DESCRIPTION

Our tip for the Embros thermal spring route: In general, the thermal spring is well visited during the high season between 10:00 - 17:00. If you want more peace and quiet, you can ride there very early in the morning (don't forget lights) and enjoy a great sunrise at the thermal spring. The fastest way to get there is the direct asphalt road. Who has a rented car and the possibility for transport the bike, can park the car directly at the hot spring, drive a small round and relax at the end in the hot spring. There are no fresh water showers or changing rooms, but the entrance is free.

This very easy tour is ideal for a comfortable holidays ending, for absolute MTB beginners or even for children. Starting point is the castle Neratzia at the port Mandraki in Kos. From there you take the cycle path along the coast (sea always on the left hand side) up to a turn-off after 4km. There you turn left and follow the cycle path again until it ends on an asphalt parking lot. A gravel road leads you directly to the sea. Only a short section of about 50m could be more sandy, otherwise the ground is firm and easy to ride on. Follow the coastal path to the first big hotel (Natura Park Village), turn right, away from the sea, and pass the hotel entrance towards the main road. There you turn left and after about 500m take the second road to the right. Now follow an approx. 1km long, gentle ascent on a wide, firm natural path up to a junction with a solar panel system. There you turn left, go downhill for a short while, then keep right to continue uphill around the slope.

If you don't want to go further up, you can use the easier variant. From the solar panel you simply follow the wide path, which leads down to the main road at Cape Agios Fokas. At the Agios Fokas Beach, there is also a nice beach bar to stop off at. To get to the thermal spring, just continue on the main road.

If you continue uphill, you will pass a chapel and a little above it you will reach a crossroads where you turn left. A short climb follows until you reach the panoramic trail. Except for a small counter climb, the path goes straight along the slope, past fields and goat farms. Behind the next small chapel in a field the partly steeper descent begins, which crosses the asphalt road after about 1.5km. Here you turn right until you reach a small kiosk after about 150m. From there a path leads down to the spa. After relaxing in the spa, the easiest and fastest way is back on the asphalt road around the cape to Kos town. From the kiosk on the road to the castle in the city it is about 12 km.
