STEAM TRAIN (PELION)
The Pelion Steam Train – A unique ascent to the legendary mountain of the mythical Centaurs. 28 km of pure discovery from Ano Lehona to the port of Volos.
The Pelion Steam train - 28 kilometers of pure discovery from the village of Ano Lehona on the coast, south of the port city of Volos, to the mountain village of Milies in the heart of the Pelion Peninsula – start a magical journey along a unique route with the famous Pelion Steam Train.
The 20 km/h Pelion train is a narrow-gauge railway with a span of 600 mm and a partial up to 30 % slope along spectacular landscapes: through historical places, overland routes directly along the coastal road, through quaint mountain villages, olive groves past, over bridges and through tunnels and up the wooded mountains of Pelion with breathtaking views.
Milies, end point of the narrow-gauge track is translated as "apple orchard." Even today, apples are traditionally cultivated in the area. All apple tartings offered in the taverns are worth a try - a delightful culinary treat for all ages.
The construction of the original line began in 1881 and was completed in 1904. It is still used by one of the few remaining steam trains. In Volos, the narrow-gauge railway served as a tram until the years 1950s. The route was closed in 1971 for economic reasons, but not cleared away. In 1985, the railway was listed as a historical monument. Since the 1990s two new diesel locomotives, externally designed as "steam locomotives", lovingly named "Trenaki" by locals, ensure regular transport of tourists to the museum.
In the summer months the train travels every Saturday and Sunday morning, from Ano Lehonia up the mountains to Milies. Once at the top, the steam locomotives are then turned on a turntable. Although this is no longer necessary for the diesel locomotives, it is still done to the delight of tourists. And all by muscle power alone. It drives back down the hill in the afternoon.
A tour with the Pelion Steam Train is the ideal day trip with family and friends! The steam locomotives can also be booked for groups.
A visit to Pelion would not be complete without having experienced this wonderful train ride!
